You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 22:37-40 ESV)

This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. (John 15:12 ESV)

Hebrews 5

For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. (Hebrews 5:1 ESV)

I thought this verse was a very good reminder of how Christ acts on our behalf as a good high priest would and in his sacrifice for our sins. He not only understands our sin and has felt the same temptations, but he was willing to suffer and die for our sin, a death he didn't deserve. Always good to have a reminder of this during Lent.

  1. In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.

    (Hebrews 5:7 ESV)

Wow. Let's just say that if Jesus offered prayers and supplications despite being perfect, then how foolish are we not to?

  2. "Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered." Hebrews 5:8

It is amazing to think that even Jesus did not take God's grace for granted. He submitted himself to God and did not complain about the suffering he faced on earth. Of anyone, Jesus certainly did not deserve what he got on earth. It really is incredible how much he loves us. And in turn, he deserves our love even more.

I completely agree with Travis in that why can't we follow what Jesus had done. He is the son of God and walked on this earth to understand what we are going through. Even though he had the power to do anything, he chose to pray and obey God's commandment. As a follower of Jesus Christ, it is foolish to overlook this passage where even the son of God is looking for God's purpose and goal. We often get carried away with our lives and difficulties that we forget to ask God what He wants us to do in our lives. I think this is important for us because we are not in charge of our lives but God is.

  4. "For by though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food, for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child."

    Hebrews 5:12-13

This verse kind of stood out to me in that even as you spend a long time in the faith, you still need to treat yourself as a child who has much to learn. It's easy to think that you already know a lot of the stories and teachings of Christianity, so why go back and learn them again. In reality, there is much to learn, and every single book of the Bible can be read and reread until hundreds of lessons are taken from it. I am certainly guilty of skimping on reading sometimes because of what I wrongly perceive as enough knowledge of God's Word. But there is always so much more that it can tell us, and thats why I'm trying to read more every day.

  5. "Although you should be teachers by this time, you need to have someone teach you again the basic elements of the utterances of God. You need milk, [and] not solid food. Everyone who lives on milk lacks experience of the word of righteousness, for he is a child. But solid food is for the mature, for those whose faculties are trained by practice to discern good and evil." Hebrews 5:12-14

I read this and just responded with a "Wow." I feel that as I grow in my faith and become more mature in my faith, I still need milk every now and again. I still crave for someone to teach me again the basic elements of the utterances of God. I yearn for solid food too, but it's important to realize the significance of those basic teachings. I've been in the Church my entire life. I should be able to teach my faith. In some aspects I can as I discuss with others and can show how God has worked in my life. In some ways I can teach as I lead a small group or a praise and worship night and can help teach the basics of the faith. However, recently, I have been called to be more mature in my faith. To dig a little bit deeper into my faith and chew on the solid food that God offers us. To pray about the hard questions, to pray about the hard decisions, and to discern amongst the good and evil of the world.

  6. "He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness."

I am so glad that God bears with us in this way. If only we too could learn to treat others with such learning and compassion. To be more Christlike, we should humble ourselves, acknowledging that we are all fallen humans, no better than any other. Yet we know that following God's laws and seeking him with all of our hearts is good and just, so we should compassionately try to help others do the same.
